US offers aluminium tariff relief

The US has announced an incentive program that could halve tariffs on aluminium imports for companies building, expanding or refurbishing domestic smelters.

Currently, a 50% tariff applies to most primary aluminium imports, a move met with significant criticism abroad.

Under the new program, companies with approved onshoring plans will be eligible to import primary aluminium at half that rate, reducing the standard tariff to 25%.

The annual quantity eligible under the reduced rate will correspond to the facility’s anticipated annual output once the project is complete. To qualify, companies must commit to starting construction on their projects by January 20, 2029.

The Trump Administration said the incentive would strengthen national security by addressing insufficient domestic primary aluminium production capacity.

Approved plans will be monitored by the Commerce Department.
